What is a toolbox talk?

A toolbox talk is a short discussion or presentation about a specific health and safety topic. It is most useful when it connects to the work people are about to do. It supports, but does not replace, task assessment, required training or your organisation’s procedures.

What should the campaign focus on?

  • Manual handling: avoiding hazardous moves and checking suitable aids.
  • Working at height: access arrangements, edge protection and the task’s agreed controls.
  • Vehicle and pedestrian separation: routes, interfaces and local controls.
  • Near-miss reporting: what happened, what could change and how to report without blame.

A practical campaign plan

  1. 1

    Pick one relevant topic

Use planned work, a reported observation or a change in conditions. Choose one hazard and the controls your organisation has agreed, rather than trying to cover everything.

  2. 2

    Make it a conversation

Describe the task, check the controls with the team and ask what could get in the way. Use an approved local example or demonstration, not an invented incident.

  3. 3

    Close the loop

Agree an action, name the person responsible and record questions or barriers. Follow up through your normal process and carry the same message into the poster and supervisor briefing.

Illustrative campaign example — adapt to your workplace

Today’s task. Today’s controls.

Poster message

Before work starts, talk through the task, the controls and what has changed. Raise anything that makes the agreed safe method difficult to follow.

Toolbox talk discussion questions

  • What is different about this task or area today?
  • Which controls must be in place before we start?
  • How will we know those controls are working?
  • What concern or barrier do we need to resolve?

An action to agree

Record one agreed action from the discussion and confirm how the team will hear about its outcome.

How to follow up

Look beyond attendance: track concerns raised, questions answered and actions closed. Ask workers whether the discussion matched the task and whether the agreed controls were available.

Turn the topic into a campaign pack

Safety Campaign Hub can draft toolbox talk wording, poster copy, presentation slides, supervisor briefings and rollout checklists using your campaign details and saved organisation profile. Review all wording against your local assessment and procedures before use. In Artwork Studio, use your own photo and branding or choose a no-image design; no AI images are created.

Free: 5 campaigns per month · Professional: 20 · Team: 75. Allowances are shared across the organisation and reset monthly, including annual subscriptions. Each campaign allows 10 successful AI section rewrites; manual editing does not use that limit.
